UCA's Amanda Whatley- 1st Place Penguin Random House Teacher Award for Literacy

AMANDA WHATLEY First Place $10,000 Grant Recipient High School English Teacher UWHARRIE CHARTER ACADEMY Asheboro, NC High school teacher Amanda Whatley’s passion for learning and teaching is apparent. She uses various evidence- based practices in her classroom to reach all learners. The Monster Literacy Night project is designed to engage students in literacy practices that include reading, analyzing, researching, and knowledge-sharing. The overall objective of the program is to encourage a lifelong love of reading and research in students of all ages, and to make difficult texts accessible to all students. This program earned her the First Place 2018 Penguin Random House Teacher Award for Literacy.

Marine Corps Veteran John Griffin visits UCA

UCA observed Veteran's Day by having John Griffin , a Marine Corps Veteran, volunteer to come in and talk to a group of Seniors as well as a class. He shared stories about his time in the United States Marine Corps and what it means to him to be a veteran. He brought MREs (meals ready to eat) for the class to try and spent some time answering questions. Thank you for your service!
